Last night my wife and I had a great 'date night ', attending a concert by Randall Bramblett. They are trying something new at the Electric City Playhouse. here in town. It was a small solo unplugged show. Just a singer-songwriter, his guitar and his piano. Randall has one of the most soulful voices I ever heard and is an outstanding musician as his hundreds of recording credits testify. But above all he is a poet, writing and singing songs with such expressive and emotional lyrics.

A lot of the almost two hours he played was songs from the new cd "Meantime" his 7th solo work. It is such a laid back easy recording. In the vein of a male Norah Jones. These songs featured just a singer and his piano. Very nice. The cd is a slight departure from his norm but after only one listen I am hooked.

The "room" as Randall refered to it was great with comfortable theater seating in a semi-round high rising layout that designed for the community playhouse productions they normaly hold. The sound was near perfect. It is a very nice place for relaxing music.

Even after a few decades in the business Randall is still a down-to-earth guy. Very open and great to talk with. He even autographed a cd for me.

Walking in the door we were greated by our friends Dan and Mary. I had not thought to inform nor invite them. It never crossed my mind, but as soon as I heard Dan's voice (he spotted me first ) I thought of all the people I know he WOULD be the one most likely to attend. I was glad he didn't miss it. We had a wonderful time. I hope they hold more events like this. I even

Well the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend is over. It was a wonderful one. My family has been blessed beyond belief. This year we were able to bring my dad back to his home for a visit, his first in sixteen months. One year ago dad was in the hospital. His doctors called us together and told us he didn’t expect dad to survive the night. At the hospital they didn’t expect a miracle. But we did !!! Having dad back in his own recliner even if just for the afternoon made Thursday one of the best Thanksgivings ever.

I spent time this week remembering a lot of my Thanksgivings past. I remember ones spent with mom, dad and my little sis thousands of miles from loved ones. Especially strong is the memory of thanksgiving spent on a Pacific Island where turkeys were unknown. But we did have coconut pie made with fresh coconut from a tree right outside our door. The table center piece was a gobbler made from another whole coconut with palm frond feathers. I always grin at that thought. Another fond memory is the times when the entire extended family was together. My Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, cousins and other people, not really related, but thought of as family. Those Thanksgivings always had 50 or 60 adults and a multitude of kids running around. There was always plenty to eat and naps for every one afterward, well except for us boys who always set up a game of backyard football. One year when I was in college we were playing our game when a group of guys happened up and asked if they could join in. I realized several of them were part of the University of Georgia National Championship team. Needless to say we lost.

Another Thanksgiving that stands out was one before I met my wife. I had just started a new job and didn’t have the money nor the time-off to go home that year. So I was truly alone on Turkey day. All the restaurants seemed closed and I drove to the Waffle House on the highway at the edge of town. For those who have never enjoyed them, the Waffle House is a roadside diner style chain, popular with truckers and late night travelers. I remember the waitress. She was an older lady, probably named Alice or Flo, I really don’t remember. I think I was her only customer all day. On that holiday I believe she was as lonely as I was. She was working alone because everyone else needed the day off. Sitting at the counter I ordered coffee and we talked as she grilled us up a big steak and plate of hash browns. Then we split a stack of pecan waffles for dessert. I stayed there talking, just talking and sipping coffee with her nearly five hours. She was at least twenty or twenty-five years older than me. We talked about the life, the world and her adventures in it. She had been most everywhere. One of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met. Though I ate there many more times I never saw her there again.

I treasure all these memories I have been truly blessed. I have friends and family who love and care for me. I am not alone, lonely, cold, or hungry. I have more to thankful for than I could ever list.

Yes TRULY BLESSED

I am thankful.

One of the things I like about my blog hosting service is that with Blogger you can prepare an entry in advance then have it post at a specific time automatically. The bad news is for me this can lead to time stamp errors. Garbage in garbage out type things.

My Happy Birthday wishes post for Jungle Mom is one of those victims. Written two days ago and scheduled for post at the proper time. But alas I time stamped it wrong and did not notice my error until this morning.

So HAPPY ( belated ) BIRTHDAY ... Sorry I was late, but I was thinking of your special time.

P.S. I hope you are feeling better by the time you read this

I've heard of Disco fever but never Dengue fever. Get well soon.

In a heartbeat it was gone. Lost forever.

While sitting quietly sipping hot chocolate the relaxed holiday truce was shattered in an unprovoked sneak attack. While the damage to our unoccupied snow fort was major, our engineers feel it can be repaired within a few days. Fortune was with us as no vital supplies were compromised.

Surveillance cameras failed to obtain clear photos of the event, however one of our operatives in the field returned this captured photo of the so called Snow-a -saurus upon it's return from the raid.

Clearly this new escalation shows that we can never be too vigilant in our defense. Taking quick action we have moved our HQ and our battle operations center underground at a location known only to senior staff, and milkshake drinking people who detest shopping at Wally World.

In response to the newest threat we are dispatching another in a long line highly technical of top secret snow heaving weapons powered by giant rubber bands and fueled with marshmallows.

Those who dare to attack us are quaking in their dark fake fur lined lairs.

Other historical battles

Happy Birthday wishes to my fellow blogger Jungle Mom.

You remind us daily of the great things in life

If your day is as good as my 29th, 21st then I know you be having a true celebration
May you have at least a hundred more.

I'm back.
After a small break I am ready to resume filling your lives with totally useless thoughts, events and insane dribble.

Dad Update: it's been a long six months for our family. The most recent month involved a twenty-four hour presence with dad. But prayers have been honored and not only is dad improving, we were able to get him admitted to a rehab facility much closer to his home. Thank you all for your continuing prayer for dad and the entire family. We still have a way to go but for now things are progressing smoothly.

We had snow last night. And it was COLD. The snow was very light and did not stick but it did snow again. It was cold last night by any one's standards. After a couple mild days it seemed even worse. The temperature last night fell to 17 degrees ( -8 c ) at my house. Combined with winds of 25-28 knots and gusts to 35 knots we had sub zero wind chills out side. At minus 15-20 degrees ( -26 to -29 c ) that's deadly if unprotected. Maybe it was colder where you live. Our friends in Anchorage might have a claim to that. But on Tuesday I was working outside in a short sleeve t-shirt. Last night was a three blanket night.

At NewSpring Church we held our first live web interactive church services this past Sunday. We had people "attend " from every corner of the U.S. and from eight countries. We had over 1700 hits and 356 attending the whole service. This is amazing. Check it out here. Get involved.

A couple quick prayer requests.
  • One member of our homegroup ( who was baptised just last Sunday ) had to put his father in the Hospice house this week. Remember John's family.
  • Also a friend and member of our former homegroup was admitted to the hospital yesterday with chest pain. A heart attack has been ruled out, but they are finding some painful infection and fluid build-up around his heart. Remember him and his family.

I know this entry has been scattered. I guess it was a sort of "catch-up blog" The break was nice but it is GREAT to be back.

Gotta run. I just found out Vic Chesnutt is coming to the "40 Watt" in Athens Saturday. It's a small place. I need to see if I can snag tickets at this late date.

See ya later

I just read where there are as many chickens in the world as there are humans. It’s a good thing. We just ate one. Well maybe not a whole one but the bird is effectively gone now. I mean how could it count with only one leg, a back and a few other assorted parts?

Lunch time and we flat tore-up a grilled chicken. Life is great. Note to farmers of America:

Grow more chickens.

I just ran over and put my fresh cup of coffee in the microwave. I like it HOT Do you know people who do that?

I heard a funny joke today.

Two blondes were driving through Louisiana. As they were approaching Natchitoches,

they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and

forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one blonde asked

the manager, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would

you please pronounce where we are,...very slowly?"

The manager leaned over the counter and said, "Burrrrrrrr-gerrrrrrr Kiiiiing."

*** Disclaimer: While I think this joke is funny it in no way reflects my opinion about a persons intelligence or how hair color effects that. My wife who is beautiful, brilliant, wise Godly woman just happens to be a blonde. And like me she enjoys a good "dumb blonde joke" from time to time. In fact, most of the ones I know, she told to me. If this offends you. Lighten-up, and get a life. Go fuss about something that actually matters. Stop bugging me.

The snowball war continues....Until NOW !!!

This morning at exactly Twenty-Seven before the hour of Eleven-Fifteen, my mostly brilliant crew of Radio Shack, Circuit City, Best Buy, and or Fry Electronic dwelling far-thinking Techno-speaking pals, gathered together and launched the "Charles Sat 1" into high earth orbit.

"Charles Sat One" is a video surveillance platform ( A SPY SAT) with hunter killer abilities to seek out snow forts anywhere in the civilized world ( soon in California too ) then render them into a giant slush pile.

Here is a highly classified look at the Charles Sat and it's secret weapon.

Snowball throwing people of the world shall now tremble.

The great snow debate of 2008 continues.

Over the early weekend it seemed my faithful opponent was on the edge of surrender. It could only be moments until victory would be mine. But with a valiant shout they were able to withstand their fortress bombardment and mount a smallish comeback. This counterstrike fell slightly short of the mark causing little real damage. But my HQ had to be evacuated briefly for cosmetic reasons.
In a situation briefing on Monday my generals and I agreed the time had come to employ more sophisticated weaponry.

The semi-automatic rapid-fire Whamo snowball launcher and most importantly the agile Sharper Image Storm crusher assault transport system.

The road to victory is through greater technology.

Friday, December 05, 2008

The great virtual snowball battle has reached a pinnacle. Allies are forming along side in epic proportions. The final end is nearing.

Though my coalition has suffered some minor hits, we shall stay the course.

Below is a secret SPY shot sent to me by one of my many undercover operatives.

As you can see the opponent's gaggle of confederates are becoming bolder. And may be creating a "super snowball" W.M.D.

A massive " Elf" ( the Movie ) style rapid fire volley may be needed to put down this uprising.

Round THREE continues

Thursday, December 04, 2008

The opponent is on the ropes. The reality of 40 hours of uninterrupted "Frosty the Snowman" video shall weaken all resistance.
Check Spelling
My virtual snow fort is ready notwithstanding some minor technical issues ( ineptitude ...naw )

Here was the plan

It started off well

but some kink in the instructions caused it to become this.

No matter with the next volley I suspect my very worthy opponent's own snow fort shall transform from this

to a shivering pile of wet frosty slush.

Then I will emerge as the new evil dictator of all Slushyonia ( slushy ona ya ) and rule the virtual world of .....

Ok Ok Ok !!

I will be in charge of the TV clicker. A man's right guaranteed by federal and moral law since the beginning of time ( or the last five years ... whichever is shorter )

On to victory

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

A nameless friend ( she knows who she is ) just commented that snow was boring.

This challenge can not be left unanswered.

Lets all band together and hit her with a giant virtual snowball to get her attention then tie her to a chair and force her to watch 40 hours of Frosty the Snowman until she relents and admits the secret joy in seeing some innocent person land on their backside, while walking down the sidewalk. (embarrassed but uninjured)
Who's In ???

Let the Snowball fly !!!

It was good to get back to meting with our friends in homegroup.
We all had taken the summer off and I had missed meeting.
Kris and I are leading this new incarnation and Sunday evening was mostly catching up time though we did have a short devotional time.
Part of our new year was spent looking at the options and direction God would have us go.
Our prayer is that we keep an open ear to what God is teaching us and an open heart that is willing to follow his leadership.

I got tagged

Six Quirky Things About Me

Phika tagged me

Here are the rules:
1) Link to the person who tagged me.
2) Mention the rules.
3) Tell six quirky yet boring, unspectacular details about myself.
4) Tag 6 other blogger's by linking to them.
5) Go to each person’s blog and leave a comment that lets them know they’ve been tagged.
And for some reason there aren't 6 rules.

Six Quirky Things about Me

WOW this is tough. Not because of a problem finding 6 things, but because of finding 6 zillion things. Which ones to post? Sorry I was so slow.

OK here goes;

  • I pretty much never watch television. Unless it is a DVD or VHS playing our TV is never on. We don't have a dish or cable; we don't even have an outside antenna hooked up. I do however have huge stereo that I play for hours daily and a massive music collection...pick a style.

  • Unlike most people I HATE the first night on fresh sheets. I like that broken-in feel on the second night best.

  • We don't have kids so I gladly fulfill that role. I have a big box full of Burger King and Mickey D's toys. When we go shopping the second department I hit is toys. Right after the electronics video and music areas.

  • I am a collector of collections. That may be classified as a sickness however not a quirk. I need to hold a yard sale for "my junk room"

  • I am a pilot. Yet I have a (morbid) fascination with aircraft accidents. I believe you can learn from the mistakes and failings of others. I love reading the details of an incident and learning about the chain of events that caused it. My library of reports numbers over 2 thousand so far. (another collection).

  • I sometimes have an odd sense of humor. The other day, I became hysterical with laughter after hearing a woman answering her cell phone. I am not sure why.

Ok I am tagging

Danny
Kevin
Janet
Holly
Jane Jane
and you if you are reading this.

We went to see Ashley play baseball this evening. Once again she had a crowd to cheer her and her team on. They won 10 to 9. After a slow start early in the season they have battled back to third place of nine teams. Tonight's win makes five in a row. In their league they only are playing four innings, ( 8 yr old) so the Monk only got two times at bat. She fouled out the first time, but her second trip to the plate she connected with a screamer of a line drive right over the pitchers head. A double driving in two. Go Monk !

After the game Kristie and I stopped by Zaxby's. We love their grilled "Zalads" The place was not too crowded and very pleasant. While we were eating a family came in sitting next to us. After receiving their food their little girl offered a blessing that warmed my heart. She looked to be about four or five, hair all braided and full of smiles. Her prayer went somethng like this. " God is great, God is good.......By his hand we are fed.... " then she concluded by saying, " Thanks for Mommy, Daddy and Victor ." who I assumed was the brother sitting next to her. She closed with a louder "AMEN!" Then she leaned back raised both of her hands and fairly shouted, " Chicken Strips, Thank You Jesus ! "

Sincerity and joy... Sometimes there can be lessons learned from the prayer of a child.

I think Her parents are doing something right
